Precautions & Preparation

- Keep prescribed burn ointments, antimicrobial creams, or pain medications ready
- Prepare a clean, comfortable area with good lighting for the dressing change
- Take prescribed pain medication 30 minutes before the appointment if advised by your doctor
- Keep the burn area elevated when possible to reduce swelling
- Avoid applying ice, butter, toothpaste, or home remedies to the burn
- Report immediately any signs of infection including increased redness, warmth, or discharge
- Maintain good hydration and nutrition to support healing
- Avoid exposing the burn to direct sunlight during healing
- Follow all activity restrictions advised by your physician regarding the burned area
