Precautions & Preparation

  • Keep your central line care schedule and physician orders readily available
  • Inform the nurse immediately about fever, chills, or feeling unwell
  • Report any redness, swelling, pain, or drainage at the catheter site
  • Mention if you have noticed any changes in the catheter or dressing
  • Keep the dressing dry and intact between nursing visits
  • Cover the catheter site with waterproof protection during bathing
  • Never remove or adjust the dressing yourself
  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or submerging the catheter in water
  • Do not use scissors near the catheter
  • Keep the catheter secured to prevent pulling or dislodgement
  • Watch for signs of infection including fever, chills, or site changes
  • Report difficulty flushing the line or drawing blood
  • Do not allow anyone to access your central line without proper training
  • Wash your hands before touching the catheter or dressing
  • Keep the area around the insertion site clean
